An Overview of Audio Branding

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

For our latest industry insight article we ask the question ‘What is Audio Branding?’

Also referred to as sonic branding, sound branding, or in more common terms ‘jingles’ the area of Audio Branding is concerned with short passages of music that identify a brand.

Prime examples of strong audio branding can be seen being used by organisations such as McDonalds, Intel and Direct Line.

Audio branding is very different to music composition and scores, and while on the face of it the jingles sound simple you can be sure that a lot of research, production time and money has been spent getting them spot on for the client.

As well as the fairly simple examples highlighted above, more complex yet equally effective audio branding can be heard in work such as the Lloyds TSB and the 20th Century Fox fanfare.

So why is this all important?
Well, research shows that appropriate sound can increase retail sales by over 30%*. Not a percentage to be sniffed at and one that every company would want to pick up if it was available to them.

Audio branding is everywhere and companies are always having to think about “how their brand sounds” right down to precise details like what sound plays when your download finishes or when you start your computer up. All these things contribute to a brand’s public image.

Audio branding gives a brand a unique identity, which can be utilised in ways visual advertising cannot achieve. Once your audio brand is an ‘established trademark’ you can tap into peoples minds without even needing to have a visual representation, opening up low cost and more interesting/creative advertising opportunities. More creative also generally translates to more memorable.

There are four areas that need to be considered when creating an audio identity:

- Length – The piece needs to be short enough to stick in the mind, but long enough to allow a sense of melody.
- Familiarity – On the first listen you need feel like you have heard it before, creating the image of an established and trustworthy brand.
- Distinctiveness/Uniqueness – You need to make sure you stand out from the crowd. It’s easy to make something unique but unique AND effective is trickier.
- Relation to product – Think about what is being branded. If it is a company then the values of that company need to be considered and brought out in the audio. A young, forward thinking company with a new product would require different instrumentation and approach to a firm of lawyers for example.

Lisn provides music and sound design for Yum Yum London animation project

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Lisnmusic has just completed a project for Yum Yum London and we’re delighted with the results. Yum Yum produced an animation for their multi-award client Young – a Manchester based creative agency who help brands to evolve. Yum Yum themselves are winners of several awards and have previously created work for clients including Vodafone, MTV, Wired Magazine, 3D world magazine, Digital Arts, BT and Box Television.

The brief for the project was to create a piece with a handmade approach, fairly minimal instrumentation and which maintained a childlike feel. The music and sound design had to bridge the gap between lo-fi and the clean 3D world created by Yum Yum.

The piece was composed by an exclusive Lisnmusic artist and includes acoustic guitar, xylophone and flute all of which were real instruments played and recorded through vintage mics to keep the sound lo-fi. A session flute player was hired to play the score written for that part.

If you’re working on a project that requires sound design and would like to talk to Lisn about how we can bring your creation to life with music, please contact us or check out the music we have available to license directly from our website.

Our latest profile focuses on Thomsonaudio, aka Andy Thomson, who holds an artist account with Lisnmusic. He’s also the latest member of staff to join the Lisn team and if you give the Lisn office of ring Andy’s is usually the first cheerful voice you’ll hear! Now that he’s settled in we thought it was time to shine the spotlight on Andy to find out a little more about his music background, the projects he’s worked on and his goals for the future.

“I have been playing bass in bands since 1998. I have played at venues all around the UK including Wolverhampton Civic, Manchester Academy and Leeds Metropolitan University. I have a degree in Creative Music and Sound Technology form Leeds Met Uni and before I worked for Lisn was successfully working freelance as a Sound Designer.”

“In my freelance work I have produced audio for Max Factor, Sony, Yell.com and Virgin Media. I have remixed tracks for a number of producers including the BAFTA award winning Sonke Prigge. I’ve also worked on national theatre tours as a sound designer and have worked at some of the biggest theatres in the UK as a sound designer, composer and operator – theatres include The West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, The Everyman in Liverpool, The Lowry in Salford, and in London The Arcola and The Battersea Arts Centre.”

“One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on has been ‘Audio Pods’ with a London-based theatre company. They are a cross between an art installation and theatre – egg shaped seats that you can sit in with full 5.1 surround speaker setup. Radio dramas play back from the speakers and put you right in the middle of the action. I did the technical specification for the pods and was the technical director on the dramas that play back.”

“With the same theatre company I have been technical director on five series of radio dramas which get played out on radio stations across the UK.”

“My goals for the future are to take a step back from my freelance work and to put all my time into Lisn, pushing the catalogue of music we have but also to really develop the bespoke side so that we can become the one stop shop for all audio requirements.”

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Lisnmusic recently worked with Claire Benson from unstuckthinking to provide the music for ‘Hypnogogo‘ – a new series of podcasts designed to make running even more fun and even more powerful.

Each Hypnogogo download is a great mind and body workout, carefully crafted so you end each session feeling refreshed, empowered and excited about your aims and ambitions. Positive press coverage has been received from the Running Free, Hello and Women’s Fitness magazines.

Hypnogogo took advantage of Lisn’s Bespoke services, and approached us with a brief for a piece of instrumental music which was uplifting and inspiring, and which would provide the backing music to Claire Benson’s motivational messages. Our artist Tom Davis worked on the brief and created the music for ‘Hypnogogo: Weight Loss’.
